So far, Freak Show has been the AHS season that took the longest for us to watch. Not that we didn’t enjoy it, we just needed to find the right time to watch our weekly episode. Freak show isn’t for any time of the day, it’s not exactly the kind of thing to watch when you eat… So, late Friday night was our freak show time and we enjoyed it that way.
We both found this season heavier to watch, probably because watching human deformities for 50 minutes is something we’re less accustomed to than people getting slaughtered for 2 hours. I know, it’s weird.
However, the amazing casting, led by Jessica Lange brought an incredible level of quality to the entire show. Of course, Sarah Paulson is amazing and all the freaks were very convincing, but a difficult character like Dandy Mott is also perfectly portrayed by Finn Wittrock.
We particularly enjoyed the opening theme of the show and the stunning performance of Jessica Lange, singing a cover of David Bowie’s Life on Mars while the freaks run the set in the background.
So, it’s with mixed feelings that we move on to the next season. On one hand, we’re sad to leave behind those characters we’ve grown to love, but we’re also relieved to start a season that’s a bit lighter to watch.
Jason’s mum is dead, and Camp Crystal Lake is shut down, but a camp next to the infamous place hosts a counselor-in-training program.
Let’s get this out of the way: starting a movie with a recap from the previous chapter is bad and useless. With that in mind, I already enjoyed the start of the movie much less than the original. As for the rest, I wish that I could keep in mind that it was 1981 and that slashers were a brand new genre… Unfortunately, I can’t. I write this post in 2021 and I’ve seen a lot of better movies since then. I can’t erase 40 years of horror just to write an objective piece.
The second part of Friday The 13th is not horrible but it isn’t good either, the new camp crew is boring, the kills are uninventive and unentertaining and the end is unsatisfying. This sequel is like its vilain, ever-decomposing and always returning to screw something that was fun.

This series is one of the best zombie TV shows I’ve ever watched. It’s fast and brutal but it’s also great at character development. Unlike The Walking Dead (which turned into utter crap), this show doesn’t rely on hours of useless dialogues to build its characters, it is mostly done through their actions.
Everything is on spot, the cinematography, the script, the constant feeling of impending doom. The zombies are only accessory to what’s really threatening: the human lack of trust and the focus on each individual’s own condition, regardless of other people’s lives.
Maybe should it have been titled “Black Winter”, since this second season mostly happens in the snow… It felt very refreshing since we watched it during one of the warmest day of this month of June.
E3 has come and gone. All over internet, gamers were going crazy with anticipation, begging for their yearly fix of hype. And, as usual, the developers threw us scraps. I went back to my cave with my tail shaking, but uncertain whether I should feel excited or disappointed. Between ridiculous announcements like Mario Rabid (lol) and a new BMX game from Ubisoft (there is still a public for that kind of crap in 2021? I’m baffled!), not much happened.
Starfield’s teaser looks good but I was more excited about the Elder Scrolls 6 Easter egg it contained. I’m also happy for Outer Worlds 2 but, once again, the trailer had absolutely no gameplay shooting.
Meanwhile, Blizzard revealed the release date of Diablo 2 Resurrected (23.09.2021). Finally, something concrete came out of that week.
Summer is here, the perfect time for a complete rerun of Friday the 13th… So, for more than 2 months, we’re going to rewatch a movie of the franchise every Saturday night. We started last week-end with the first instalment from 1980.

This movie is a legend. It’s Friday the 13th before Jason Voorhees, it’s the first “ki ki ki ma ma ma”… After so many years of being a fan, I’ve just only read on Reddit that “ki ki ki ma ma ma” is meant to resemble Jason’s voice saying “kill kill kill, mom mom mom” in Mrs. Voorhees’ mind.
Even if the original Friday the 13th is not the first slasher ever made, since the movie is widely inspired by John Carpenter’s Halloween (and the movie Meatballs), it is the first slasher ever made where people get murdered while on vacations in the wild.
The movie nears perfection in many ways: the setting is amazing (Camp Crystal Lake, the first), the sex scenes, the booze, the stupid friend, the uninterrupted rhythm of the action, the absence of drama, the soundtrack, the amount of gore… In short, it is the perfect template for a slasher.
Friday the 13th is not only a genre defining movie, it is also at the top of our all-time favourite horror movies list.
I don’t often write about trailers or teasers but I got so excited with this one that I couldn’t keep myself from posting it. One of my favourite cartoons returns and they’ve used Bonnie Tyler – Holding Out For A Hero as soundtrack (which was also the soundtrack of one of my favourite 80s TV shows: Cover Up). It comes out in July, the timer is set!
I totally agree with Isabelle, Soforah and I got married in June, 18 years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun! We didn’t have much of a celebration this year, with the Covid and all… But we’re almost fully vaccinated, one more month of patience and we’ll be able to go for one of the things we’ve been missing most: a Whopper. We’ll make it a celebration Whopper!
Inge found this little gem on Steam and we had a lot of fun completing the first 6 cases. The bonus cases, however, were less logical and required to exhaust every dialogues and click several times on objects that unlock later in the story.
I love point-and-click games and their crazy sense of humour but I really don’t like when they stray too far from logic. Using a key on a lock to open a door is ok, giving a tinfoil hat to a monster so he feels protected from mind reading governments is ok, using a stick on a frog to unclog toilets to get a password easily gets tedious. So far, The Darkside Detective has managed to stay on the right side of this line. Let’s hope it’ll stay that way in the second chapter “A Fumble In The Dark” which we’ve already purchased and installed…
Every Friday night we watch an episode of American Horror Story, I already loved the TV-show, but 1984 is amazing! We’ve skipped a few seasons only to watch this one, and it was worth it. Weirdly enough, season 9 got a lot of bad reviews. In my opinion, it’s one of the best seasons with such an electrifying 80’s vibe, it makes you want to plunge into the Camp Redwood bloodbath.
While it doesn’t fail to capitalise on Camp Crystal Lake references, Jason Voorhees, or the notorious serial killer Richard Ramirez, the TV-show is full of 1980’s nostalgia with a compelling story that keeps you engaged. You have to hand it to the creators, they’ve got it all right, from the aerobics-scenes, to the music (Kajagoogoo, Billy Idol, Greg Kihn,…), the fashion,… it’s a straight trip down memory lane. The opening credits alone are worth the watch:
Also, the casting is as great as always, among my favourite characters this season: Matthew Morrison (Trevor), Emma Roberts (Brooke), Billie Lourd (Montana), and Zach Villa (Richard Ramirez). The scenes have enough gore and horror to keep any slasher fan entertained, and has a somewhat happy and satisfying end. AHS 1984 is an instant add to our regular rerun list, now I only have to find it on blu-ray and we’re all set.
We’ve just completed a full rerun of the Alien collection. I’m not gonna write a review for each movie, I don’t think that I know enough superlatives to describe how much we love the franchise. Instead, here is our ranking from amazing to excellent:
Alien: The original stays incredibly good, actually our favourite of the franchise;
Aliens: Much more of an action movie with more guns and more jokes. While very entertaining, it has lost a bit of its mythical aspect compared to the first chapter;
Prometheus: I know, the purists will go crazy, but we honestly think that Prometheus is an incredible movie and that it fits perfectly in the story;
Covenant: That’s it, the purists will never come back to our blog now! Still, I can’t help to find the end of the story a perfect fit;
Alien 3: Still excellent, but slower and darker. Enjoyable but not essential;
Alien Resurrection: An excellent sci-fi movie and a great Alien movie, but it’s the one that we find less amazing, just excellent.
